The Origin of the Wedding Dress

Before the 19th century, there was no unified color for the wedding dress. Until 1820, white has been widely used on the wedding dress because of the Queen Victoria. From them on, the white wedding dress becomes the formal wedding gown.

The wedding exists from time immemorial in the world, but the history of the wedding dress date from about 200 years ago. In fact, the lower hem of the white gauze dress is from the original Catholic ceremony clothing. In the some country of ancient Europeans, the people must go to the church to accept the blessing and pray from the priest or pastoral, because of the theocracy constitution, then their marriage become legal. Therefore the bride must wear white ceremony dress to express the loyalty and purity.

White wedding dress is very prevalent in Victorian Times. After Queen Victoria got married with her husband wearing the white wedding dress. From then on, the white wedding dress became popular around the world, even nowadays, it is still the most favored wedding gown for the all the girls, because it is the symbol of purity and loyalty. However, the bride did not pay attention to the color of their wedding gown, what they cared about is which color is the most popular at that time.

One the wedding, we not only need comply with the customs; also need pay attention to the exquisite of the wedding gown. In tradition wedding of China, the bridegroom and bride usually wear red gown, because red is the symbol of good luck and happiness in China, which predict your thriving married life. However, in the western country, the bride is used to wear white gown on the wedding. Since the Roman Times, white symbolizes celebration. Between the time of 1850 and 1900, white is also the symbol of wealth. Until the 21st century, the symbol of purity is beyond the other meanings.

In the west country, white is always associated with virginity. In ancient Roman Times, the bride wears white wedding dress and orange veil, which symbolizes the passion flames. And in the western Catholic tradition, white represent happiness. However, in some others country, white represent different meaning in the wedding and funeral. For example, white represents status change in Andaman Islands.

In the early times, the traditional white dress is the privilege of the noble. In Victoria Times, most of the brides wear the traditional national gown on their wedding, only the upper dress can wear the white wedding dress which symbolizes the power and the identity. Until the noble disappear in the modern times, the white wedding dress becomes the common choice for all the brides.

Compared with the history of the western white wedding dress, the history of Chinese red phoenix gown is relatively simple. Dragon and phoenix plays a very important role in the myths of China. The dragon symbolizes male, and the phoenix symbolizes female, that’s the reason why there are phoenix design on the wedding gown of the bride.

With the changes of the fashion, except the traditional white and ivory wedding dress, the pink, light pink, powdery orange, pink blue, pink and purple, pink green and shallow silver grey etc, is also become the fashionable color for the wedding gown. But, in the western, only the remarried bride can wore pink or acid blue wedding dress.
